Our story of Mabel Vickers pottery workshops and gifts
Mabel Vickers is a quaint, locally loved creative space and gift destination at 271 College Street in Palmerston North, Manawatu. Once my husband’s grandma’s plant shop, this space is now named in her honour, a tribute to the warmth, creativity and sense of home she brought to everything she did.
I’m Fiona, the heart and soul behind Mabel Vickers and the maker of Table Ceramics. This is more than a shop and pottery studio, it’s a personal, evolving expression of my love for clay, community and the joy of making by hand.
Inside the shop, you’ll find a thoughtfully curated collection of gifts, including beautiful finds from local New Zealand brands and select pieces from further afield. My own ceramics (Table Ceramics) form a key part of the collection, featuring many one-of-a-kind pieces that embody an organic, perfectly imperfect aesthetic in soft earthy tones, alongside some vibrant coloured works.
In addition to hand built ceramics, I create a collection of porcelain slip cast pieces, including paint your own kits and hand painted items. All available online 24/7 and at the Little Black Shop. Each slip cast piece begins as a hand designed original, with the mould making process taking several months from concept to finished form. This slow, thoughtful craft lets me share my designs more widely while preserving the handmade touch.
Pottery workshops are also a big part of life at Mabel Vickers and something I love sharing. These beginner friendly classes reflect the style of my work and focus on slab building techniques. These sessions offer a chance to connect, unwind and create your own keepsake.
Whether you’re browsing for a thoughtful gift, adding to your collection or eager to try pottery, Mabel Vickers is about connecting through creativity and celebrating the art of beautiful functional pieces. Rooted in place, history and community, it’s a space to slow down, find joy in craftsmanship and support local makers. Whether you visit to shop, learn or simply soak in the atmosphere, my hope is you leave feeling inspired and connected to something uniquely beautiful.
