The story behind Mabel Vickers
Mabel Vickers is the little black shop at 271 College Street in Palmerston North, where you can make by hand, discover something meaningful and find beautiful, useful things for home and gifting.
The space was once a plant shop run by my husband’s grandmother, and Mabel Vickers is named in her honour. I like the idea of carrying forward her sense of warmth, creativity and home, while giving the space a new life of its own.
I’m Fiona, and Table Ceramics was where my love of making with clay began. Over time, that grew into Mabel Vickers, a place where making, teaching and finding beautiful things come together.
I make my own ceramics in small batches and teach every pottery workshop myself. I especially enjoy sharing pottery with people who are trying it for the first time and seeing what they make.
The pottery classes and workshops are beginner friendly and centred around simple hand building techniques. Everything is provided, and there’s no previous experience needed, just come along, learn something new and make something with your own hands.
The pieces I make through Table Ceramics are mostly functional, hand built ceramics in neutral, earthy tones, with occasional colour and slip cast designs.
Alongside my own ceramics, the shop has a small collection of beautiful and useful things from makers and brands I’ve chosen with care. They’re pieces I’ve selected because they’re things I genuinely love and would be happy to use or give.
Mabel Vickers has grown from a love of making into a place for making, teaching, shopping and connecting with good things. Whether you come for a workshop, a handmade piece or a thoughtful gift, I hope you enjoy being here.
